LOJA DO SABER: First Science Shop in Portugal

The first science shop has officially been implemented on 29th October 2004 in Portugal under the name „LOJA DO SABER“. This instituion is a non-profit association that joins the science shop movement which has developed in Europe in the 1970s. The role of these organisations is to facilitate knowledge transfer to and from civil society organisations.

The definition of science shops roots on the concept of „community based research“ (CBR) and is as follows: A science shop provides independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society.

Science shops use the term "science" in its broadest sense, incorporating social and human sciences, arts, as well as natural, physical, engineering and technological sciences. Science shops offer citizen groups free or low cost access to scientific or technical knowledge which will help them to achieve social or environmental improvement.

What distinguishes science shops and CBR organisations from traditional knowledge transfer facilities is their commitment to participatory methods. Much of the research produced by science shops is in direct response to the expressed needs of community organisations. Such research therefore reflects the concerns of civil society rather than the interests of researchers, academic institutions or private companies.

We may distinguish between two main models of science shops: those which follow the Dutch model and are university based and those which are not based in a university.

The LOJA DO SABER belongs to the second type and has been founded by a small group of persons and entities that are „foundation members“ of the association. However, interested persons and institutions that would like to improve its implementation may become a member of the LOJA DE SABER at any time.

CEIFA ambiente is one of the foundation members and ensures the work of the association during its first life phase. For more information, please contact: caixinhas@ceifa-ambiente.pt.
